Introduce Yourselves
August 29, 2007 by John Northey
As we continue to work hard to load up the remaining drills, now might be a good time for our members to introduce themselves. Let us know how many of you have reached the finals this year!
Let us know if you are a full time or part time coach, do you run Auskick Clinics, are you a player or just a football tragic? We hope that the Swooper Coach site can one day be a great community of coaches and AFL fans to discuss and interact.
Are any of you playing in finals this September?

I john humphries coached the 2/3s at Reynella club in S.A last year and this year and this year the boys won the sfl mini league carnival and won 17 out of 19 games.I am a level 2 coach.I coached Campbelltown under 18/s to a premership in 1998 in Sydney, and u20/s to win in 1989 at liverpool club and in 1994.I love coaching and next year I will coach my son jacks 4/5s team at Reynella wineflies
Thanks John! Well done on your teams results
After playing against “Swooper” for many years when he played for Redan and I played for Ballarat, it’s great to see the fantastic work in progress, and the well deserved results that you are getting at Ballarat John. I would hope that like I me, many former Ballarat players will attend the Swans finals campaign this year because under your guidance, we have a great chance of Grand Final glory in 2007. Although now mainly a footy supporter, I guess I am the unofficial U18 & U15 “goal kicking coach” at Bungaree. I wish “Swooper”, every player and the Ballarat Football Club great success in the finals. John Maher
Great to hear from you John.
The support for the Swans during 2007 has been sensational and there was a great crowd of Red and White at the eastern oval last Sunday. Hopefully another big crowd of Swannies this Sunday against East Point.

John, I am a Level 1 Coach with Sweeney Reserve Auskick in Berwick having coached Preps through to Grade 2 over the past 3 years. My ambition is to follow my son through junior football ranks and to one day coach a premiership team. At Auskick we typically lose a lot of kids to Under 9 Football teams after Grade 2. I think youngsters should stay in Auskick a year or two longer to learn and practice the games basic skills without the pressure of playing a competitive football. What do you think?
John, I am also a keen Richmond supporter and my Auskick Coaches cap has been signed by (8) past Richmond Coaches and I would like you to also sign my cap. Thanks Trevor Watson
Daniel Preston,22. I’m in my first year of coaching and have just been knocked out of the Finals. 20 points away from a grand final! My team is the Benalla All Blacks (Panthers) U18 in the Ovens & King Football league. I also assist with the seniors, taking training and on match day.
John, I’m a level 1 coach in my first year, and coached the Magpies u13′s to a premiership in the Stawell U13 Association this year. We have a great competition with 4 teams, who then progress up to the U14′s in the Wimmera and Horsham District leagues.
I thoroughly enjoyed the season this year, it’s a great buzz to teach junior footy, no matter what the skill level. E
John – next year it looks like I may have to coach our o’40′s Masters side – I retired from this age group this year and will play o’45′s next year(I’m 53). Whilst I will have enthusiasm, drive and a reasonable knowledge on drills & fitness work. the side lacked any strategy for game play and this I need to link to our drills. This will be a big test being surrounded by ‘experts’ who will no doubt continue to maintain an unhealthy waist measurement and dietary habits sthroughout the next season despite my best efforts (well it is footy for fun!). Any direction you can point me in would be appreciated.
cheers
Ric
John, committee & players, congratulations on your great 2007 season. I know that to get knocked out of the finals is disappointing; in fact devastating. But your strong performances suggest Ballarat will be a team to be feared in 2008. As a supporter, I was proud of your efforts and I say well done. John Maher
As the average age of our team is 21yrs, we can look forward to the years ahead.
This is one of the hardest working and most professional unit of people I have been involved in football. (Ballarat Football/Netball Club.)
To all our past players and loyal supporters thank you for your wonderful support to the club throughout the year.
Looking forward to season 2008.
Swooper
This will be one experience you will treasure for life.
Being surrounded by ex players (experts), my only comments is
GOOD LUCK. (What a challenge and have fun)
I am a Level 1, and I have coached at school football in Modified level (8-11 year old) for 3 years and 1 year at Little League(12-13 year old) with all going well.
This year I started coaching U15′s in club football for SGFC in the BL&G FL, where we came third out of 9 teams. At this level there is a big difference in abilities and starting with a majority first year players they did very well. Found your info very handy and with your drills being very helpful. I have enjoyed the season, but have had a couple of confrontations with 2 individual parents, one being put down to a wrong interpertation by the parent thinking that I was being racist, which was sorted out, and the other ending up with the solicitor and I am still waiting for an apologetic letter from the other parent.
Again I have enjoyed the season and will be coaching the U15 again next year.
Go the Swooper coach
I am a level 1 coach, and I currently have finished coaching my second season with South Augusta Football Club in the Spencer Gulf League, SA. I have 4 years of experience at Under 18 level. I have yet to get past the first week of the finals, unfortunately didn’t make it at all this year. I am hoping next season will be my final as the under 18 coach as next year I am throwing my hat in the ring to be player/coach next year for the league team. I will be only 28, but I have alot of knowledge and hopefully I can fulfill a dream to do what my grandfather did in 1964, play/captain/coach the premiership team. Love a challenge
i am coaching u/18 football at noarlunga fc which is in the southern league in sa im a level one coach i am the first coach to get a u/18 team up at our club through hard work we manged to make the finals good stepping stone for years to come the boys created their own history and set the mark for the future.im 30 years old and have great ambitions to coach a A grade flag one day.
Welcome on board
Hi Swooper,My name is neil,I have only just signed up and looking forward to reading comments from junior coaches about there everyday goings on in football and coaching,I am the senior coach of the buln buln side in the ellinbank league and i have been coaching and playing for over 25yrs having played over 600 games of senior football ,What does surprise me is that there is still a lot of passion in regards to junior coaching, And i do think that a lot of junior coaches are now user freindly towards players, umpires, and last but not least the parents compared to not that long ago when there was the serial bad parent and also the bad coach that wanted to win at all cost, however it has been i think a change of generation that has educated parent coaches into understanding in what is required of them,so i thought i would let all junior coaches know that “it does not matter weather you win or lose it is how you play the game” if you follow those rules your coaching will improve week in week out .
