A very interesting situation happened last Saturday. The Full Forward had taken a mark in the goal square, the umpire took him around on the angle, as he ran into take his kick (5 metres out) it appeared he slipped just prior to making contact with the ball, it slew off the side of his boot and the goal umpire believed it went through for a goal, got the all clear from the central umpire and waved the flags.
The opposition became very vocal as they thought it went through the points, even the boundary came in and spoke to the goal umpire and central saying it was a behind. The goal would have stood because all clear had been given and flags waved however a very honest Full Forward spoke to the umpires and said it had gone through the points.
The goal umpire then raised his flags crossed them (means a correction) then waved a point. The game then continued. Make up your own mind if it had of been a close game with seconds to play. I know our Full Forward would have made the same decision.
This is the action the Goal Umpire should have taken.
Unsure "Not My Decision!"
Used to signal to field and boundary umpires that the goal umpire is unsure as to whether the ball has gone through for a behind or not. Goal umpire places arms behind back and studiously makes a point of making no other signals.
Then the flags were waved
Score has been annulled.
