Running a marathon is an incredible personal challenge - not only is it a physical challenge, but it’s a challenge for the mind. There are virtually hours when you have time to think and to control, or be controlled by your thoughts.

This is the time of the year that all coaches plan for when they are appointed to a coaching position prior to the start of each season. The reality is only a handful of coaches in each competition are given the chance to live the dream of testing their coaching ability in finals football. When the time comes around for you as a coach, there are many little things that must be done correctly to ensure that your team has every chance of success.

Psychological stresses occur frequently during the period of preparation for serious competition .The failure to be able to cope with such stresses has a debilitating effect upon performance. Coaches rarely recognize the importance of this phenomenon in their handling of athletes.

FACT 1 As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the birds to follow. By flying in a “V” formation, the flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.
LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get to where they are going quicker and easier because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

If I could go back to the early years of my coaching, one thing I would do is regularly test the skills of my players, so that I could establish the strengths and weaknesses of the group.
There have not been many skill test documented in our sport and the best that would be done is players having 10 shots a goal from different angles to give them a score for accuracy.
