Over the past few weeks studying AFL games I believe we are seeing subtle changes which WERE ingrained previously in our football makeup.

What do we see,

  1. Players continue to give ball off quickly, very little or no thought of the position their team mate is in (understanding it’s HOT in the packs) then they continue to run to the next spot to receive. (this is why, players are now racking up stats very rarely heard of before). Player receiving ball generally standing still or running into trouble didn’t call or communicate however is given the ball.

Result: Immediate tackle, loss of possession or ball-up.

Subtle changes are taking place,

SHEPHERDING

Players are starting to protect the receiver of the ball with a strong shepherd, rather than peel off to receive the ball back.

This provides the receiver a little more time to make an assessment, give it  off again or do I go forward looking for a leading player and gain valuable yardage.

What do we see,

  1. Players marking just outside 50m arc taking too long to kick forward to a 1 on 1 contest or a 2 on 1 contest often waiting, preferring to kick to a short lead by which time flooding has occurred.

Result: Poor pass, loss of possession and flooding.

Subtle changes are taking place,

LONGER KICKING INTO FORWARD LINE

Some of the more effective sides are kicking forward more quickly to a 1 on 1 contest in the forward line – or even a 1 on 2 contest. Players (kicker) are moving into position quicker so they can access the situation to make a quick decision, pass the ball off or go long to the key forward.

What do we see,

  1. Continued passing into the forward line eliminates the great crumbing players in our game (they continue to lead, run into open spaces or have to fly in packs to make a contest).

Subtle changes are taking place,

 CRUMBING

Crumbing is becoming more evident, longer kicking from outside 50m arc.  Quicker movement into forward line, smaller forwards able to follow the flight of the ball to the contest, creating crumbing opportunities.

Many goals are being kicked by small forwards.

Teams are not relying wholly on the Full forward to kick goals.

Subtle changes especially in the play of some of the top sides.

Examples:

  1. SHEPHERDING

  1. LONGER KICKING INTO FORWARD LINE

  1. CRUMBING
