Forwards Leading and set up.

  • No need to drill (kick hard and low) a ball at the forward leading.
  • Generally leading forwards are in front of the opponent.
  • The idea is to place the ball (looping a kick) 20 metres in front of the leading player, allowing the player to run onto the ball, rather than drill the pass at him.
  • This also gives the flankers time to position themselves well in front of the leading forward, they become the crumber in case the backman is able to punch the ball away. It also places the flanker in a position to support or to take a quick handpass (run centrally) from the leading forward.

Set up in Forward 50m.

  • When a ball up takes place in the 50m arc most on ballers move in. Generally everyone moves in, remember we cannot all get the ball.
  • This is a time when the forwards need to dictate terms to the backman, move around make them nervous.
  • I believe it’s a good idea for the flankers to move out and be in a block off position.
  • In and around the ball our team needs to apply as much pressure as possible, this in turn means if the opposition gets the ball and a hurried kick (pressure) takes place our flankers are in a good position to take an easy mark. If our team wins the ball, once again the flanker is in a position to receive a handball (outback) or to run past and receive ball from our player.
  • Being out the back always gives you time to access the situation
